SUNDERLAND -- Mrs. Phyllis VanGuilder Ross, 76, a resident of Barney Orchard Road in Sunderland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday morning, May 3, 2004, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Mrs. Ross was born on April 8, 1928 in Rutland, the daughter of the late Lyle and Irene (Hall) VanGuilder. During her lifetime Phyllis worked in many professional careers including a ballet instructor and Bible school teacher. She used her skills as a secretary at Howe Scales in Rutland and in the health care professions in both Vermont and Florida. Once settled in Arlington, Phyllis enjoyed working as the assistant postmaster in South Dorset.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary to Post #29 in Readsboro and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Arie #1861 in Bennington.

Phyllis was a gentle and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She brought love, life and smiles to her family and friends who will greatly miss and always love her. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed watching and cheering on the Boston Red Sox. She also had a great love of wild birds and flowers and took pride in the varieties of birds at her feeders and her rare wild flowers, the lady slippers and daffodils.

Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Clarence Ross of Sunderland; daughters and sons-in-law Lynette and Gregg Richards-Over of Shrewsbury and Naomi and Jeff Brown of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law Richard Lyle and Trish VanGuilder of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Gary and Gerry Ross of Arlington; stepdaughters and sons-in-law Debbie Ward-Matteson of Manchester, Donna and GeneWalker of Spokane, Wash. and Becky and Walter Ward of Manchester. Also her grandchildren Janette, Morgan, Cortney and Lauren Over, Mandy and Mike Scholes, Shelby Brown, Shannon Ross, Amanda Groesbeck, Tim and Michelle Walker, Michael, Aaron, Ryan and Travis McDermott, Christopher and Lance Ross, Wayne, Sonya, Christi-Joe, Amanda, Alicia and Daniel Ward; 16 great-grandchildren, and nephews Lyle and Darin Gallison of Vergennes. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by a sister, Francis Gallison of Vergennes.

A service of remembrance for Mrs. Ross will be held on Friday, May 7, at 10 a.m. at the Readsboro Baptist Church with the Rev. John Brigham, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot at the Village Cemetery in Readsboro. Following the committal service, friends are invited to join the Ross family in the vestry of the church for a time of fellowship and refreshment. There are no calling hours planned.
