Ralph M. Burgess 1921 - 2009 BENNINGTON Ralph M. Burgess, 87, husband of the late Irene Dunbar Burgess, a former resident of Bennington and Shaftsbury died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the home of his daughter, Judith Blake in Shelburne surrounded by his family. Born in Pownal Oct. 29, 1921, son of Elmer E. and Eva A. Honn Burgess. He received his education in the Bennington schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School. Ralph was a member of the Vermont National Guard for 37 years, retiring in 1987 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Ralph and Irene were married in Bennington on January 25, 1942. Mrs. Burgess died May 10, 1994. Ralph was employed for 25 years at St. Johnsbury Trucking until his retirement in 1982. He was a life member of the Bennington Moose Lodge 1233 and a member American Legion Post 13, both of Bennington. He also was a member of Teamsters Union 597 and a former member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department He leaves a daughter, Judith Blake, of Shelburne; seven grandchildren, Kelly Mayer and her husband, Ron of Bennington, Jamie Blake and his wife, Anne of Gainesville, Ga., Shannon Blake of Shelburne, Vt., Shane Blake and his wife, Donna of Colchester, Vt., Melissa Maher and her husband, Robert of Laurel, Maryland, Chad Blake of Shelburne, Vt., and Ashley Burgess of New York, 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Markiewitz of Colonie, N.Y.; two brothers, Bernard Burgess of SanMateo, Calif., and Elmer J. Burgess of Bennington; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Burgess was predeceased by two sons, John E. Burgess and Ralph M. Burgess Jr., two grandsons, Michael C. Blake Jr. and John R. Blake and four sisters and a brother. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robin Green officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Should friends desire contributions in Ralph M.
