1925 - 2016 BENNINGTON Ralph E. Prouty, 91, a resident of Oakes Street, Bennington, died Monday, April 30, 2016 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a brief illness. Born in Winhall on January 14, 1925, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Etta (Jefts) Prouty. Ralph received his early education in the Manchester schools, the Kurn Hattin school in Westminister and was a 1942 graduate of Burr & Burton Seminary. In 1943 Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served with Company A, 5th Tank Battalion, 16th Armored Division in the European Theater. Ralph was discharged in May, 1946. He married the former Edna Irene Russell in Bennington on March 29, 1947. They recently observed their 69th wedding anniversary. In the late 1940's Ralph was employed at Bennington Display. In 1949 he began a career in the Teflon field that took him to Pownal, Mineola, NY, Hoosick Falls, NY, Rochester, NY and finally Newtown, PA where he retired as project engineer in 1991 and returned to Bennington. Ralph was a member of the Second Congregational Church, American Legion Post 13 and a former member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department. He loved working with wood and made many pieces of furniture for his family. He enjoyed his weekend golf outings. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ralph had resided at the Vermont Veterans Home for the past two and a half years where he was very active playing Poker, Bingo and enjoying the musical entertainment. The family would like to recognize everyone at the Vermont Veterans Home for their outstanding care and concern that they showed to both Ralph and his family. Survivors include his wife, Edna Prouty of Bennington; three children, James (Meridyth) Prouty of Pittsboro, NC, Kathleen (Gary) Hamilton of Bennington and Robert (Michele) Prouty of Warminster, PA; six grandchildren, Susan (Jimmy) Loncar, Tara (Michael) Lovell, Jonathan (Sarah) Ryan, Amanda, Joshua and Jay Prouty; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Williams of Saxtons River; four brothers, Harold of Bennington, Donald of West Townshend, Howard of Florida and Clyde of South Londonderry; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ralph was predeceased by a sister, Edna Goodnow and three brothers, Theodore, Raymond and Norman Prouty. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Ralph E. Prouty will be held at the Four Chaplin's All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt officiating. Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family at Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in Mr. Prouty's memory may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund, 325 North Street, Bennington, VT 05201. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net All members of American Legion Post 13 are asked to meet at the Vermont Veterans Home on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. to conduct services in honor of Mr. Prouty.
