Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Raymond G. Niles, 88, a resident at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, and formerly of Main Street, Route 346 in Pownal, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington from complications of pneumonia.

Raymond was born in Pownal on Feb. 24, 1919, the son of Gordon Niles and Bertha (Towslee) Niles. He married his wife of 60 years, Mary (Wilcox) Niles, in North Pownal on June 29, 1947.

Raymond was employed as a lumberman for Northeast Wood Products in Pownal for 20 years, followed by a 20-year position as the rural mail carrier for Pownal until his retirement in June 1979. He joined the United States Army in 1940 serving in the Pacific theatre during WWII and he was stationed in Germany during the Korean conflict. He retired from the Army National Guard in 1979 with the rank of Major.

”Ray” was an avid sports fan and took great pride in his family and community. He was a caring and giving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Pownal; daughters Diane Niles of Pownal and Terri Pettibone and her husband Wayne (Sam) Pettibone of Shaftsbury; his son Gary Niles and his wife Debbie of Shaftsbury Hollow; granddaughter Whitney Pettibone and grandson Cody Pettibone and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ray will be held Wednesday morning Aug. 22, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington. Interment will follow in the family lot on Oak Hill cemetery in Pownal. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be held Tuesday evening Aug. 21, 2007, from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
