CLARKSURG, Mass. -- Raymond H. Vallieres Sr., 78, of 178 Middle Road, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 18, 2006, at the North Adams Commons.

He was born in North Adams on June 21, 1927, a son of the late Emile J. Vallieres and Viola (Babeu) Vallieres. He attended the former Notre Dame Parochial School in North Adams.

In his earlier years he was employed at the general Cable and Cornish Wire Co. in Williamstown. He then was a union carpenter for the local No. 108 carpenters union. Mr. Vallieres was also the owner and operator of Ray’s Lawn & Garden Center in Clarksburg and North Adams.

He was a lifelong communicant of Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur Church in North Adams. He was active in all the church’s activities, teaching CCD, serving as a minister of the word and Eucharistic minister, a member of the Parish Council, volunteer at bingo, altar server and acolyte for funeral Masses. He served as chairman and organizer of the Marian Profession in North Adams. He was one of the founding members of the North Adams Council of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a founding member of the former Clarksburg Ambulance Service and was a founding member of the Hairpin Turners Square Dancing Club and enjoyed dancing with his wife.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carol (Norman) Vallieres, whom he married Oct. 13, 1951, in Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur Church in North Adams; three daughters, Deborah Calnan and her husband, Mickey, of Readsboro, Vt., Dianne Bolognani and her husband, Lee, of Readsboro, Rebecca King and her husband, Gary, of Florida; two sons, Raymond H. Vallieres Jr. of North Adams and Richard D. Vallieres of Clarksburg; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helene Delisle of West Springfield.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Vallieres and Valmore Vallieres, and a sister, Theresa Burrus.

Funeral services for Raymond H. Vallieres Sr. will take place Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church in North Adams.

Burial will take place in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Catholic community through the funeral home.
