DORSET -- Raymond Kopituk, 81, a seasonal resident of Dorset and Pinecrest, Fla., passed away at his home in Dorset on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006.

He was born on June 15, 1925 in Roselle, N.J., the son of Kostik and Anna (Krofchek) Kopituk. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in metallurgy.

On Jan. 10, 1948, he married Dorothy Osiecky in Montclair, N.J. She passed away on Feb. 20, 2004. He was an aeronautical engineer with Morton Thiokol in New Jersey. He then became vice president of Coast Metals and following that, vice president of Aerodex in Miami, Fla. He then owned and operated Florida Welding Services in Miami.

He was on a team working at NASA that helped look into the Challenger explosion. He was a member of the American Metal Society, the Society of Metallurgical Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Upon his retirement he split his time between his residences in Pinecrest, Fla., and Dorset.

He is survived by his daughter, Dory Feldmann, of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Richard J. Kopituk, of Latta, S.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Raymond Jr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at 7 p.m. at the United Church of Christ of Dorset-East Rupert. The Rev. James Gray will officiate. Burial will be Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Maple Cemetery in Dorset. Friends may call at the United Church of Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, from 6 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
