Obituary Condolences

MANCHESTER -- Raymond Merrow, 72, of Old Airport Road in Manchester, died Monday afternoon, April 4, 2005, at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.

He was born in Rutland on May 27, 1932, the son of Thomas Franklyn and Emma Victoria (Rivers) Merrow, and attended local schools. Raymond worked in the Danby marble quarries for many years and was employed by the Sirloin Saloon Restaurant for more than 20 years. Mr. Merrow served as a member of the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Raymond was a volunteer firefighter for the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 in Manchester, the Dorset American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Manchester.

Raymond was an avid hunter and loved fishing. He was very creative as an artist, which was evident through his many woodcarvings and furniture making. He enjoyed watching golf and baseball and cherished times spent with his family.

He is survived by two daughters, Jill Smith of Dorset and Carlene Gould of Middletown Springs; a son, Chris Bentley of Manchester Center; his sister, Mary Hon of Arlington; his grandchildren, Brittney Herrmann, Matthew Herrmann, Adam Merrow and Hannah Gould; his longtime companion, Virginia Weeks of Danby; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Merrow of Danby.

Funeral services for Raymond will be held Saturday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at Brewster Funeral Service, 34 Park Place Manchester Center. The Rev. Michael DeMasi will conduct the service. There are no visiting hours. Burial with full military honors will follow in the family lot in St. Jerome’s Cemetery in East Dorset.
