Richard B. Davis

SHELBURNE -- Richard Barre Davis, M.D., F.A.C.P., died on Friday, May 27, 2005.

Son of Perley Martin Davis and Kittie Louise Barre of Readsboro, Dr. Davis was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Readsboro, graduated in 1932 from the Mount Herman Preparatory School and proceeded to earn both his bachelor of science degree (1936) and his doctor of medicine degree (1939) from the University of Vermont. His internship (1939-1940) and four year residency in internal medicine (1940-1944) were completed at the Mary Fletcher Hospital (currently known as Fletcher Allen Hospital) where he was the first resident to train in internal medicine.

Following his residency, Dr. Davis married Elizabeth (Betty) Brown, assistant directress of nurses, He was assigned by the procurement and assignment board to practice in Bennington. Dr. Davis continued his practice in Bennington until retiring in l982. He was a lifetime member of the American College of Physicians.

In 2000, Dr. and Mrs. Davis moved to Shelburne Bay Independent Living in Shelburne. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty; two sons, Richard Barre Davis Jr. of Monkton and Bradley Gilman Davis, of Chazy, N.Y.; and a daughter, Lynne Davis Hansen of Montpelier; grandchildren, Richard Barre Davis II and Seth Aiken Davis, of Monkton, Austin Dean Davis and Stephanie Dana of Chazy, and Sarah Elizabeth Hansen and Kathryn Richardson Hansen of Montpelier; brother, Roger M. Davis of Brattleboro; and nephews, Martin Davis and Karen L. Davis.

Burial will be in Cabot Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Dr. Davis requested donations be made to the Habitat for Humanity of one’s choice or to the Second Congregational Church in Bennington.
