SHAFTSBURY -- Richard Charles Blake, 80, of Elm Street in Shaftsbury, died at his residence on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, following a brief illness. He was born in Vienna, Austria on Sept. 3, 1923, and was the son of Adolf and Klara (Strupp) Schwarz. He received his education in Vienna, England. He received his bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York, and his master’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. He moved to Vermont in 1956, and began teaching at Bennington College. He served as dean of Bennington College for several terms. He married the former Joan Waltrich in Bennington in 1959. Mrs. Blake passed away on Oct. 4, 2002. Mr. Blake has also taught during sabbaticals at Williams College and University of Michigan. He served with the Army during World War II, and gained his U.S. citizenship because of his wartime service. Mr. Blake was an avid reader, conservationist, naturalist and a member of Bat Conservatory International. He enjoyed opera, taking long walks and bicycling.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jodi and Larry Courtney of Medway, Mass.

There will not be any services. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorials in his honor may be made to Bat Conservatory International, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, VT 05201.
