Obituary Condolences

ARLINGTON -- Richard “Dick” C. Brainerd, 55, a resident of Old West Road, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington following a long battle with a brain tumor. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Willimantic, Conn. on July 4, 1949 the son of Dr. Edwin G and Marjorie S. Brainerd. Dick graduated from Windam Center Elementary School and Windam High School before attending Manchester Community College and receiving a B.A. from the University Of Miami (Fla.) All during his youth and up until the late 1980s, Dick spent most of his summers at his parent’s home in Madison, Conn.

In the mid 1970s, Dick and a few of his boyhood friends from Madison moved to the southern Vermont area. Dick eventually settled and lived for many years in Arlington. For an extensive period he worked for the local Alpine Slide Co. and traveled across the country and in Canada to service the slides. He also worked for the Bromley Mountain Ski Area and as a house painter.

Dick will forever be remembered for his easy-going nature and friendliness. He was an avid follower of the N.Y. Giants, University of Miami football and UConn basketball. He also loved horse racing. For decades he and his friends made an annual week-long trip to Louisville to partake in the Kentucky Derby festivities. Dick was forever adding to his music collection and was quite proud of his dancing ability. Other interests included swimming, boating, and fishing. In his later years he could often be seen golfing on the Arlington Public Golf Course.

He is survived by his parents, Edwin and Marjorie Brainerd of Palm City, Fla.; his two brothers, Ned Brainerd of Anderson, S.C. and Jeff Brainerd of Arlington; his former wife Sandie Brainerd; a son, Andrew Brainerd; two daughters, Christina Allen and Kylie Herrington, all of Arlington; also two granddaughters, Kelsey and Kaylie Benson of Manchester; and a grandson, Dylan Herrington of Arlington.
