Richard C. Hollister BENNINGTON Richard C. Hollister, age 89, a long-time resident of Bennington, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, leaving many fond memories for his loved ones. Richard, Dick, was a 57-year member of the Bennington Fire Department where he served as Chief from 1963-1965. He loved fishing, was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a loyal Red Sox fan and also a fan of the New England Patriots. More importantly, he was totally devoted to his family, particularly his wife of 61 years Janet May Mattison. A father of eight, his oldest son "Dickie" passed away in 2004 leaving seven surviving children, Gloria Rodgers and Bob, Alan and Pattie, David and Nancy, Pam Ketzner and Kent, Patti Becker and Craig, Bonnie Wilkins and Randy, and Tyler and Denise. He also leaves two siblings, Helen Holbrook and Clara Smith, both currently residing in New Hampshire, 16 grandchildren including Danny, Sarah, Stacy, Hannah, Abbey, David Jr., and Steven Hollister, Nathan, Kari and Keenan Ketzner, Todd Becker, Tristan Wilkins, Bridget Parker, Paige Cross, Austin & Jazmine Hollister, nine great-grandchildren, Danny Jr. and Dustin Hollister, Dave Hollister, Levi Hollister, Evan Becker, Faith Wilkins, Carter Parker, Ashlyn Parker and Kyler Cross. Dick served in the South Pacific during World War II with the Navy Seabees. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and the American Theater Medal. He served as the Bennington County Rep to the Vt. State Fire Fighters Association, was a member of the New England Chiefs Association, and a Past President of the Bennington County Mutual Aid. In addition, he served as a member of the old Howitzer Company Vermont National Guard between 1935 1938 and in the CCC between 1935 1936. He was a life time member of VFW post 1332 and American Legion Post 13. Dick was a volunteer at the Bennington Health & Rehab for 11 years where he received an award for being volunteer of the year in 1999. He worked for 41 years at Benn Mont, many of those as a supervisor. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Fire Department or Bennington Health and Rehab Activities Department in care of the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. Calling hours will be held at Hanson & Walbridge Funeral Home on Wednesday Nov. 19th, 2 to 4 p.m. & 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, burial with full military honors will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Bennington Fire Department Headquarters.
