NORTH POWNAL -- Richard E. Champney Sr., 78, a well known resident of Tubbs Road in North Pownal and more recently of the The Village at Norton Potters in Bennington, died Wednesday April 18, 2007, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born in North Adams, Mass., April 24, 1928. He was the son of the late Albert E. and Alice (Christenson) Champney. He received his education in North Pownal and Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Mr. Champney was a 1956 graduate of St. Joseph’s Business College in Bennington. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Champney married the former Barbara Mackey at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in North Pownal on Sept. 29, 1951.

Mr. Champney owned and operated his barber shop in North Pownal for many years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in North Pownal. He was a member of the Pownal American Legion Post 90 and a 35 year member of the North Pownal Fire Department where he served as fire chief for seven years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332 in Bennington. Mr. Champney was a charter member of the former Pownal Lions Club and a member the Loyal Order of Moose in Bennington. He also had served on the Pownal School Board.

He enjoyed playing golf and his family was his main interest.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara M. Champney, of Bennington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruthann and John Buchanan of Grantham, N.H., and Jane and David Anderson of Narragansett, R.I.; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Pierrette Champney of Essex Junction; six grandchildren, Audrey Rousseau of Beavers Falls, Pa., Travis Champney of Essex Junction, Vanessa and Alex Anderson of Narragansett and Jenna and David Buchanan of Grantham, N.H.; a sister, Caroline Moon of East Chatham, N.Y.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Friday April 20, 2007, at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer and from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, April 19, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in South Lawn Cemetery, Williamstown, Mass.

If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. Champney may be made to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
