BENNINGTON -- Richard Henry Curtis, 81, a resident of North Branch Street, died Tuesday morning, March 20, 2007, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a long illness.

He was born in Barre March 8, 1926. He was the son of the late Henry and Nyna (Shales) Curtis.

On March 8, 1979, Richard married the former Beryl Henderson in Jackson, N.Y.

For many years Richard was employed as a heavy equipment operator for various construction companies throughout the area and most recently worked for Mangino Construction in Malta, N.Y.

Richard enjoyed tinkering and building things. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and dancing.

Survivors include his wife Beryl Curtis of Bennington; three sons, Richard Curtis of Hawthorne, Fla., Steve Curtis of Salem, N.Y. and Barry Curtis of Rutland; two daughters, Nancy Rivers of Benson and Deborah Abare of Florence; a stepson, Duane Bentley Sr. of Bennington and a stepdaughter, Patricia King of North Adams, Mass.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a son, James Curtis; two brothers, James and Roy Curtis; and four sisters, Marie Curtis, Theresa Loveland, Delsey Norton and Daisy Bruso.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

The burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
