Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Funeral services for Richard E. Champney Sr. were held from Our Lady of Lourdes Church in North Pownal on Friday, April 20, 2007, where the Mass of Resurrection was offered by the Rev. Vincent Copploa, associate pastor.

Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Reatha Williams. Hymns offered during the funeral service were “Be Not Afraid,” “Here I Am Lord,” “You Are Mine” and “On Eagles Wings.”

The funeral pall that draped Mr. Champney’s casket during the Mass was placed by his children, Rick Champney, Jane Anderson and Ruthann Buchanan. A wooden cross was then placed on the casket by his wife, Barbara Champney. The offertory gifts were presented by Ruthann and Jane and words of remembrance were offered by Rick. The scriptural readings were offered by Leonard Anzivino. Serving as Euharistic ministers were Ellen Tornabene and Elenaor LaBonte.

Bearers were his son, Rick Champney, three grandchildren, Travis Champney, Alex Anderson and David Buchanan, and two sons-in-law, John Buchanan and David Anderson.

Thursday evening Father Coppola offered the wake service at the funeral home.

Burial took place in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, Mass., with Father Coppola offering the committal prayers.

Following the funeral service a reception was held at American Legion Post 90 in Pownal.

Mr. Champney, a former longtime resident of North Pownal, died April 18, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
