1926 - 2008 Obituary
Richard C. Gardner Sr., 81, of Main Street died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, following a brief illness, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
Born in North Bennington on Dec. 24, 1926, son of Rutherford C. and Grace Greene Gardner, he received his education in the North Bennington schools.
Dick was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy.
Dick was well known throughout the area for many years working as a salesman at local automobile dealerships. Following his retirement Dick worked for several years as a driver at the Red Cross and later at the Green Mountain Express.
Dick was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington. An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed camping, hunting, time spent with his family, and his dog, Stellie, and cat, Muffin.
He married the former Shirley Bump at the Old First Church in North Bennington on July 5, 1949. They would have celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary in July.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Tink" and Joyce Gardner Jr. of Bennington, and Gary and Robin Gardner of Shaftsbury; five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Towne of Bennington, Gail and Edward Elmore of Bradenton, Fla., Sharon Gardner and Robert Harrington of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Wendy and Scott Chenaille of Bennington, and Kim and Mike Livingston of Bennington; 14 grandchildren, Scott and Stacey Gardner of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Kaylee Gardner and Frank Mulvihill of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Barry and Amy Richardson Jr. of Shaftsbury, Jeromy and Heather Gardner of Sandgate, Michael Gardner and Kendra Herring of Shaftsbury, Bethany Haynes of Shaftsbury, Jodi Hamilton and Dan Pratt of Bennington, Lisa and Derek Boynton of Apollo Beach, Fla., Ryan and Kristin Lewis, Zachary and Andre-Anne Chenaille, Jordan Sherman, Bradley, Tyler and Nichole Livingston, all of Bennington; nine great-grandchildren, Mattison Marie Mulvihill, Riley Jade Richardson, Matthew Gardner, Shane Haynes, Sydney and Jade Boynton, Brodi Lewis and Colin and Aiden Chellis; two nephews and their spouses, Jack and Mary Gardner of Bennington and James and Helen Gardner of Dalton, Mass., and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was also predeceased by four siblings, Cleon Gardner, Clara Trombley, Alice Fairburn, and Bertha Thomson.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at 1 p.m. with Kenneth Coonradt, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
