Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Richard H. Ralph, 100, died on Jan. 5, 2005, at the Centers For Living And Rehabilitation in Bennington. Previously he resided at the Fields in Manchester Center for a time. He was the widower of Alice Walwood Ralph who died on June 30, 1988.

Mr. Ralph was born May 17, 1904, in Bruce, S.D. to the late Albert and J. Beatrice Merritt Ralph. When he was two years old, the family moved to Rowley, Mass.

He attended elementary school in Rowley and high school in adjacent Ipswich, Mass. He started working at the Ipswich Mills in July 1921, enrolled at Northeastern University Night School and graduated in June, 1925 with a BCS degree.

His entire work history was in textiles. From 1939 until 1952, he was employed at the E-Z Mills in Bennington. While residing in Bennington he was involved in several area organizations. He served as director and president of the YMCA, president and director of the Bennington Club, president of the Bennington Chamber of Commerce, and vice chairman of the Vermont State YMCA.

His work history outside Bennington took him to Ipswich, Boston, and Lowell, Mass; Valatia, N.Y.; Dunville, Ontario, Canada; Utica, N.Y.; Johnstown, N.Y.; and Clayton and Wells, N.Y. He retired in 1973 after 52 years.

In earlier years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, travel, bee keeping, and cribbage.

He leaves four children: Claire O’Leary of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; James R. Ralph, M.D., of Amherst, Mass.; Brenda Madkour of Manchester Center; and David W. Ralph of California. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother Guy M. Ralph in 1952 and son Richard A. Ralph, in July 2002.

He is also survived by two granddaughters, ten grandsons, four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

Mr. Ralph was of the Protestant faith. Private memorial services will be held at a later date at the Rowley, M.A. Main St. Cemetery.
