Richard H. Hunt 1928-2012 BENNINGTON Richard H. Hunt, 83, a resident of North Branch Street, Bennington died peacefully Thursday, March 29, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Winchester, New Hampshire on Nov. 17, 1928 he was the son of the late Harry Sylvester and Julia (Haley) Hunt. Dick received his education in the Bennington schools. On January 10, 1946, shortly after the end of World War II, Dick joined the Merchant Marine at the age of 14. He later served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Dick married the former Frances E. Wood at the First Baptist Church in Bennington on April 29, 1951. In earlier years he was employed at Putnam Memorial Hospital and the Vermont Steak House. Dick then went to work at Mt. Anthony Union High School as head of maintenance where he remained for 22 years until his retirement in 1993. A very active member of the community for many years, Dick was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Eagle Hose Company of the Bennington Fire Department, Taconic Grange and Bennington Moose Lodge 1223. He also was one of the original board members when the 204 Depot Street program. He was a longtime collector of Hess Trucks and model trains. Survivors include his wife, Frances W. Hunt of Bennington; two daughters, Krystal D. (Charles) Morse of Bennington and Melody A. Burke of Bennington; three sons, Terry R. (Dorothy) Hunt of Spofford, NH, Timothy G. Hunt of Bennington and Roger F. Hunt of Milton; twelve grandchildren, James R., Shawn Jason, Benjamin and Mirralyn Hunt; Zane, Christopher and Aaron Burke, Miranda Porter, Susan Belville, Jodie Allen and Matthew Chaney; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles "Timothy" Hunt of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Shirley Woodward of Bennington and Dolores DeLong of Troy, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jessica Hunt The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Monday, April 2, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Richard Hunt's memory may be made to either the First Baptist Church or Taconic Grange through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. All members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday afternoon to conduct services for Dick Hunt: Bennington Fire Department at 3:00 P.M. and Taconic Grange at 3:30 P.M.
