Obituary Condolences

CRESSKILL, N.J. -- Richard L. Gioia of Cresskill, N.J. died on April 8, 2004.

Born on Feb. 20, 1929, he was the faithful and devoted husband of Barbara - daughter of Howard and Elizabeth Rudd and sister of Judith Rudd of Bennington, Vt., cherished father of Deborah, Richard Jr., Robert and Philip, and proud grandfather of eight. He is survived by his brother, Frank.

Dick Gioia spent much of his working career with the Singer Sewing Machine Co., where he managed retail stores in New York City, including their flagship store at the Empire State Building on 34th Street. He also conducted a highly regarded series of training seminars for the company, which proved to be seminal experiences for many young and aspiring sales people, both in the company and beyond.

Subsequently, he went into business for himself, creating successful retail appliance stores in North Plainfield, Jersey City and Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. where he remained until his retirement. An inveterate salesman, he never strayed too far from the art of the sale, making his final one (his minivan) a week before his death. Only a game of cards could rival the love he had for his chosen vocation.

Interment was performed at Brookside Cemetery in Englewood, N.J. on April 12. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Dept. of Cardiology, 350 Engle St., Englewood, N.J. 07631.
