Richard "Dick" Leard, Sr.

1936-2014 Richard "Dick" Leard, Sr., 77, a resident of Cardinal Lane in Bennington passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation surrounded by his family. He was born in Stoneham, MA November 17, 1936. He was the son of the late George and Merle (Buxton) Leard. Dick served in the Marine Corp and was a Korean Veteran. He married his "Bride" Joanne (Herra) Leard in 1959 and would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on January 17, 2014. Dick relocated his family from MA to VT with the Globe Union Company in 1965. He was a truck driver for the company until 1974 at which time he started working in the plant so he could spend more time with his family. He was employed with Globe Union/Johnson Controls for 30 years until the time of the plants closing in 1994. During his time in the plant he was President of the Union and held that position for about 10 years. In earlier years Dick was an avid hunter, played softball and enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the Bennington Elks Lodge # 567 and the American Legion Post 13. Dick enjoyed his word search puzzles " to keep his mind fresh" and also enjoyed putting puzzles together. He was an avid Red Sox, Bruins and Giants fan. He is survived by his "Bride", Joanne Leard of Bennington, a son Richard "Rick" Leard, Jr. of Bennington and a daughter and son in law, Valerie and Paul Clark of Bennington. His grandchildren, Josh Clark and wife Tiffany, Kyle Leard and wife Lauren, Jamie Clark, Jillian (Clark) Weaver and husband Miles, Rachel Leard, Kelsey Leard, Karley Clark and Morgan Leard; his great grandchildren, Jadyn, Cameron, Carson, Hadley, Leium and Marley, as well as Gina Anzivino, mother of 3 of the grandchildren. Two brothers, George Leard of Oklahoma and Bernie Leard of New Hampshire, a sister, Clare Costa of Massachusetts and two sister in laws Mary Hardy of New Hampshire and Ann Fullerton of Massachusetts as well as several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a son Wayne Leard who died in 2003. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday January 15, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be offered at 6:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation for the great care that was provided to Dick and the family.
