HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Richard M. Rice, 90, of White Creek, passed away on May 5, 2005, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center with his family at his bedside. He was the husband of the late Reba (Benson) Rice whom he married in 1936. In 1947, he met and married Carolyn (Slade) Rice who died in 1995.

Richard was born on April 17, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of the late Rev. Maxwell W. Rice and Alice Marion (Monger) Rice. Richard was brought up in Wappingers Falls, where he attended elementary school in Poughkeepsie and Washington, D.C. He graduated from Lawrenceville in 1934. He attended Middlebury College, Boston University and Rensselaer Institute of Technology.

Richard started his career as a professional and part-time reporter in Boston. He worked for Bausch & Lomb in Rochester as a process engineer from 1942 to 1950. In 1947, he was awarded a patent for an improved process of coating lenses. In 1950, he moved his family to White Creek and started a dairy farm, later turning it into a tree farm, the Four Winds Farm on Rice Lane.

From 1956 to 1973, he worked at various engineering and sales positions. Among these were Mack Molding, Falls Hardware, Dodge Machine & Tool and several other companies. In 1973-74, he worked as the general manager of Moonlighting & Supply Company in Coxsackie with his son Lawrence by his side.

He finished out his career as a design engineer at Garden Way Inc. in Troy, retiring in 1981. Richard also did side work as a heating and plumbing contractor.

Richard was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Chapter 114. He was a former member of the Town of Hoosick Lions Club and the group “Beyond War.” He enjoyed nature, camping, hiking, boating and rock collecting. He also liked computers and did some writing. Richard was a wonderful father, grandfather and man. He will be missed.

Richard is survived by three sons, Richard Rice of St. Petersburg, Fla., Theodore Rice of White Creek and Lawrence Rice of Oakland, Calif. and their families; 10 grandchildren, Shane, Ross, Devin, Kelley, Timyn, Peace, Jessica, Krista, Elliott and Schuyler; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Richard is predeceased by a brother, Arthur, who died in 1983.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 16, at 11 a.m. from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls. Burial will follow the service at the Center White Creek Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad or the Hoosick Falls Health Center through the funeral home.
