Richard "Dick" Mattison

1929 - 2014 SHAFTSBURY Richard "Dick" Mattison, 85, a resident of Rod and Gun Club Road, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 at his residence. Born in North Bennington, on May 16, 1929 he was the son of the late Wendell and Anna (Niles) Mattison. Dick received his education in North Bennington and in 1946 graduated from Vermont Technical College On Jan. 6, 1951 Dick married the former Lorraine Moriarty at Saint John the Baptist Catholic in North Bennington. For four years Dick served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne. He served with Company B while stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following the service, Dick and Lorraine returned to the area, purchasing a farm in Shaftsbury where they started a successful dairy farm. Dick was also employed at Polygraphic Printing Company in North Bennington, he maintained both careers for 20 years. In 1972, Dick and Lorraine purchased the Iron Kettle Restaurant in Shaftsbury. The restaurant was sold in 1988. They began the process of cultivating and planting trees on their Shaftsbury property which became Mattison Christmas Tree Farm, the family continues to operate today. Dick was proud of his farm, the herd of dairy cows, he especially enjoyed years of working his vegetable garden. He enjoyed listening to and telling stories while visiting with family and friends. Dick was proud of his family. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Mattison of Shaftsbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Jack Rifenburg of Mechanicville, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Serena Mattison of Shaftsbury; three grandchildren, Kainen Mattison of Shaftsbury, Elizabeth Schauer of Scottsdale, Calif. and Alonya Schauer of Spring Creek, Nev.; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Sue Mattison of Shaftsbury and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Ann Mattison and a brother, Douglas Mattison. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Graveside committal service will be on Friday, Oct. 10 2014 at 1 p.m. in the family lot at the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith officiating. At Dick's request there will be no calling hours.
