BENNINGTON -- Richard R. “Dickie” Hollister, 66, a resident of Rake Branch TraIl in Searsburg, died Tuesday morning, June 22, 2004, at the Vermont Veterans Home with his family by his side.

Born in Bennington on Nov. 21, 1937, he was the son of Richard C. Hollister, who survives, and the late Virginia (Lebrainie) Hollister. He grew up in Bennington and attended local schools. He enlisted in the Navy on May 4, 1955, received his basic training in Bainbridge, Md., and went on to aviation prep school in Norman, Okla. His first duty station was in Norfolk, Va. where he attained the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer, specializing in aircraft structures and hydraulics. He also served a tour of duty aboard the USS Valley Forge aircraft carrier. He was separated from active duty on Nov. 20, 1958 and received his honorable discharge May 3, 1963. In earlier years he had worked for the former Norwegian American in Bennington and then as a floor installer for Dunham Furniture Company. He had resided in Bristol, Conn. for 26 years where he continued his career in the floor covering business; upon returning to Vermont in 1991 he began working at Valley Carpet and Tile in West Dover and then at Bennington House of Tile installing floor covering. Mr. Hollister had been an honorary member of the W.H. Bradford Hook and Ladder Company of the Bennington Fire Department and had been active in Troop 55 Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Green Mountain Christian Center. As an outdoorsman, he had a love of nature and compassion for animals; he enjoyed hunting and fishing and had taken to photographing wildlife in recent years. He also enjoyed music, especially playing his keyboard, and the company of his grandchildren.

He leaves his son Daniel C. Hollister Sr. and his wife Tammy of Wilmington; his father Richard C. Hollister and his wife Janet of Bennington; his brothers Alan Hollister and wife Pattie of Averill Park, N.Y., David Hollister and wife Nancy of Bennington, Tyler Hollister and wife Denise of Bennington, Jim Spencer of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Terry Spencer of California; his sisters Gloria Rogers and friend Bob Behran of Wyantskill, N.Y., Pam Ketzner and husband Kent of Tacoma, Wash., Patti Becker and husband Craig of Bennington, Bonnie Wilkins and husband Randy of Bennington, Vicki Spencer of Riverside, Calif. and Cindy Ware of Altadena, Calif.; two grandsons, Daniel C. Hollister Jr. and Dustin A. Hollister; two aunts, Clara Smith and Helen Holbrook; an uncle, Robert Holbrook; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington on Saturday, June 26, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. John Goyette, pastor of the Green Mountain Christian Center. Burial will follow in the Hollister lot in Woodford Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present. Memorial gifts may be made in memory of Richard R. All members of the Bennington Fire Department are asked to meet at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Friday evening at 7 p.m. to pay their respects to the family of Richard Hollister.
