Obituary Condolences

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- Richard D. “Dick” Shmigel, also known as “Little Thunder,” 58, died on Friday at his residence.

Born in Cambridge, N.Y., on Sept. 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Frederick A. and Carolyn Viets Shmigel Sr. A lifelong resident of the Hoosick area, Dick was a 1965 graduate of Hoosick Falls Central High School whose class had just recently celebrated their 40th reunion. After school, he was a member of the Vermont National Guard before working as a machinist at the Dodge Machine Tool in Hoosick Falls and the Watervliet Arsenal. Dick worked for various trucking companies before becoming an independent trucker as RDS Trucking of Hoosick.

He was a member of the Hoosick Falls Elks, the Bennington Moose, the Bennington Eagles and attended the First Baptist Church of Hoosick Falls.

Survivors include his two children, Laura J. Schmigel of Bennington and R. Dennis (Melissa) Shmiglel Jr. of Exxex Junction, Vt.; grandchildren, Katlyn M. and Hannah R. Schmigel; longtime companion, Peg Stevens of Bennington; brothers, Fred A. (Sharon) Schmigel Jr. of Buskirk and Gerald E. (Karen) Schmigel of Hoosick Falls; and his former wife, Sue Green of Williston, Vt. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Robson-Reinfurt Funeral Home, 72 Main St., Hoosick Falls, where the Rev. Donald Nelson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. for visitation.

In loving memory of Dick, memorial contributions may be made to the town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, the Grace Christian School or the charity of one’s choice.
