Richard Thompson 1941 - 2008 BENNINGTON Richard E. Thompson, 66, of East Road, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at his home, following a courageous battle against cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends. Born in Cambridge, N.Y., on June 11, 1941, son of the late Franklin and Irene Le Barron, he received his education in Cambridge and in Bennington. Richard was a truck driver for the Department of Transportation and was responsible for plowing in Woodford. His radio handle was "Salt Shaker". He was a member of the Putnam Hose Company in Bennington for 16 years and was a fire policeman for several years as well. He drove the starting gate at the former Pownal Race Track for many seasons. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Mariah. He enjoyed her company on his lawn tractor and taking her fishing. He was a devoted husband to his wife, the former Priscilla Houlton, who survives. Besides his wife, he leaves two stepsons and their wives, Paul Yerke and Janet Sauer-Yerke of Bennington, and Philip and Dolores Yerke of Troy, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Shirley Thompson of White Creek, N.Y.; three sisters, Sandra Danforth of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Shirley Thompson of Candor, N.Y., and Ruth Francis of Columbus, Tenn., his granddaughter, Mariah Sauer-Yerke of Bennington, and step-grandsons, Eric Sauer of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Josh Sauer of Bennington, and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Richard's request, there will be no services or calling hours. Interment will take place privately by his family.
