Rita S. Kearns

1921-2013 Rita S. Kearns, 92, a lifelong resident of Bennington and a two-year resident of The Arbors at Shelburne, passed away Thursday, August 15 at the Arbors. Born in Bennington on January 7, 1921, Rita was the daughter of Charles A. and Delia (Boutin) Sausville. She was educated at Sacred Heart School and Bennington High School. Rita, who was married to James M. (Mickey) Kearns, lived nearly all of her married life on Putnam Street. As a young woman she was a full-time homemaker raising their six children. She later worked for many years in the meat department of the Grand Union in Bennington. Throughout her adult life she enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting and sewing. Rita was a member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church and a member of the Ladies of Saint Anne Society. She was a devoted supporter of Sacred Heart School and during her retirement enjoyed being able to spend time reading to the children in the school library. Rita is survived by her children; Judith Dudley (Edward) of Prairieville, LA, Pamela Minardi (Benjamin) of Leola, PA, Kevin M. Kearns (Suzanne) of Westford. VT, Colin P. Kearns of Sarasota, FL and Sheila M. Kearns of Montpelier, VT. She also leaves three sisters; Irene Herrick, and Leona Sausville of Bennington and Margaret Munns of North Brookfield, MA and one brother Robert A. Sausville and his wife Geraldine (Marra). She is further survived by 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Maureen M. Kearns of Pittsfield MA, and her husband, James M. Kearns; her parents, Charles and Delia Sausville, and her brother Charles J. Sausville (Dorothy), all from Bennington and her brother Clarence Sausville (Margaret) from Hoosick Falls. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, August 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Rita S. Kearns memory may be made to either Sacred Heart School Media Center or the One Company Fund (which supports employees of the Arbors Senior Living Center and their families in times of extreme needs) through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
