BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Rita Lorraine Patten, 75, widow of Arthur E. Patten Jr., a resident of Pleasant Street, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

She was born in Bennington, July 2, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Alfred and Malvina (Roy) Allen. She received her education in Bennington and was a graduate of the former Bennington High School. She later attended the University of Vermont in Burlington.

Mr. and Mrs. Patten were married in Bennington on April 11, 1948. Mr. Patten died in 1971.

Mrs. Patten was employed as a travel agent for 35 years. She owned and operated Aladdin Travel and was part-owner of Tri State Travel in Bennington. She also owned several rental properties in the area.

Mrs. Patten was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a member of Saint Anne’s Society at the church. She was a former member of the Bennington Rotary Club. Rita enjoyed crafting, playing golf, traveling and gardening.

Survivors include her six children, Sandra Patten Young and her companion Winston Lother Il of Bennington, Christopher Patten and his wife Karen of Nashua, N.H., Pamela Patten Crockett of Melbourne, Fla., Deborah Patten Cullinan and her husband John of Sunderland, Cynthia Patten Adams and her husband Jim of Pensacola, Fla., and Michael Patten of Bennington; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Shellie Harrington and her husband Raymond Harrington Jr. of Shaftsbury, Jackie Cookson and her husband Anthony of Great Mills, Md., Joshua Young of Bennington; Amanda Young of Bennington; Sarah Prouty of Melbourne, Fla.; Troy Patten of Nashua, N.H.; Craig Adams of Pensacola, Fla.; Erin Patten of Stamford; and Jonathan Patten of Stamford; five great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Alfred and Kay Allen Jr. of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; three cousins Raymond LaRue of Quincy, Mass., Francis “Pete” Roy of Bennington and William Grant of Bennington.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 10 a.m. with a prayer, and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10:30 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be celebrated.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Tuesday, April 20, 2004 from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The recitation of the rosary by members of Saint Anne’s will be held at 6 p.m.

A graveside committal service will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery Thursday at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. Patten may be made to either the Vermont Chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
