Rita C. McCann 1921 - 2012 BENNINGTON, VT Rita C. McCann, 91, widow of John R. McCann, a longtime resident of Washington Avenue, died Monday, March 12, 2012 at the Vermont Veterans Home. Born in Fitchburg, MA Jan. 24, 1921, daughter of Hector and Louise (Drinkwine) Collette, she received her education in the Fitchburg schools and was a 1938 graduate of Fitchburg High School. Mr. & Mrs. McCann were married in Fitchburg on Oct. 11, 1947. John died Sept. 4, 2003. From 1940-1942 Mrs. McCann worked as a dental assistant in Fitchburg. From 1942 thru 1948 she worked as an accountant for the state auditor's office at the state house in Boston. After moving to Bennington in 1967 with her family, Mrs. McCann was employed for many years at Ed Levin Jewelers in Bennington and Cambridge, NY. Mrs. McCann was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and also a member of Court St. Andrew, Catholic Daughters of America. Mrs. McCann had enjoyed swimming at the Bennington Recreation Center for many years. Survivors include her three daughters, Cynthia M. Harvey of Lynchburg, VA, Collette M. (William) Schoellkopf of Buffalo, NY, and Paula J. McCann of Rutland; two sons, Murray J. (Kimberley) of Reston, VA and Michael P. (Lynne) of North Bennington; four grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irene (Richard) Collette of Groton, MA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. McCann was predeceased by her siblings, L. Valerie Collette, Richard O. Collette and Paul H. Collette. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Friday from 5 to 7 P.M. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in St Bernard's Cemetery in Fitchburg, MA at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rita's name may be made to the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
