1924 - 2014 SUNDERLAND Rita was born on Sep. 26, 1924, in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., the middle child of five, to Catherine O'Neil Dahl and Anthony D. Marino. Growing up on Pleasant Avenue, Roosevelt, Rita attended Roosevelt High School and later worked at Mitch 11 Field Air Force Base as secretary in the Commander General's office. On Oct. 2, 1946, Rita married Edwin Wesley Ruland, CPO, USN. After Wes retired from the Navy, they settled in Merrick, Long Island and began their family with three daughters. In 1954, the family moved to Sunderland, Vt., where Rita supervised the family business, Ruland's Motor Court located on Route 7, while Wes worked as a manager in Hale Furniture Company. During the course of their Sunderland years, three boys were added to the family. In the early 70's, Rita became a Real Estate Broker working for Hoisington Realty of Bennington, moving to the office of Kimball-Martin in Manchester and then to the sales office of Equinox on the Battenkill, later returning to Kimball-Martin, until her retirement in 1994. As her children left the nest, Rita played golf, volunteered at Hildene, and traveled to Florida during the winters. In 1996, she sold the house on Mountain View Terrace and moved to Melbourne, Fla., where she died on May 16, 2014. Rita is survived by her six children, Kate of Dorset, Vt., Lisa of Palm Bay, Fla., Althea of Dunwoody, Ga., Wesley of Hinesburg, Vt., David of Colchester, Vt., and Charles of Norcross, Ga.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
