Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Robert A. Carpenter Sr., 74, a resident of Buckley Drive, Bennington, died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the Albany, N.Y. Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y. Nov. 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Henry M. and Ruth (Lorette) Carpenter. He received his education in the Woodford schools. Mr. Carpenter was a World War II Army veteran, serving from May 2, 1946 until March 30, 1949.

He married the former Hertha L. Widl Aug. 21, 1948 on the U.S. Army base in Vienna, Austria.

In earlier years Mr. Carpenter was employed at Sprague Electric and Waterveliet Arsenal. He later worked for 25 years at Cushman Manufacturing Company and Green Mountain Furniture in North Bennington.

Prior to his retirement he was employed at Smeltzers and UST in Bennington.

A life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Hale Mt. Fish and Game Club, he especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, singing and playing the guitar. He was also a member of the Brush Brothers at the Cushman Manufacturing Co.

Survivors include his wife, Hertha Carpenter of Bennington; two sons, Robert A. Carpenter Jr. of Bennington and John A. Carpenter of Stamford; five daughters, Barbara A. O’Dell of Shaftsbury, Janet D. Wells of Pownal, Judy A. Carpenter and Cindy M. Miller, both of Bennington and Donna M. King of Hawaii; 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three brothers, L. Alden Carpenter of Killeen, Texas, Clifford Carpenter of Bennington and Michael Carpenter of Smyrnd, Del.; two sisters, Marie Ayer of Bennington and Jean A. Stoessel of DesMoines, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Mr. Carpenter was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Henry M. Carpenter Jr., Roy Carpenter and Doris LeBlanc.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard McSherry, pastor of the Canton Community Baptist Church in Canton, Conn., officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
