BENNINGTON -- Robert Allyn Gilarde, 68, a resident of Stark Street, Bennington, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, N.Y. following a long illness. Born in Canaan, Conn. April 19, 1935, he was the son of the late Joseph Gilarde and the former Emma R. (Gatti) Gilarde. He received his education in the Pittsfield, Massachusetts schools and was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mr. Gilarde later attended Bryant College in Providence, R.I. where he was a member of the Class of 1958.

Mr. Gilarde was a U. S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1958 until 1962.

A resident of Bennington for the past 35 years, he previously had been employed as a banker at both the former First Vermont Bank and Chittenden Trust Company. He later was employed as a financial manager and had also worked at various automobile dealerships in the area.

Mr. Gilarde was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and had served as a eucharistic minister at the church prior to his illness. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 307 and also a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly at the K of C.

His family and grandchildren were his main interests. Bob was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and he also enjoyed antique automobiles.

Survivors include his wife of forty five years, Norina (Jankowski) Gilarde of Bennington; his children and their families Michela Green, her husband Gary and their children Jessie and Stephen of Brewster, N.Y.; Jeffrey Gilarde, his wife Lisa and their children Graham, Alec and Camille of Cobalt, Conn.; TerriAnn Whitman, her husband Jeffrey and their children Abigale and Matthew of Shaftsbury; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, July 18th at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be held Thursday at 5 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mr. Gilarde may be made to the SVHC/Dialysis Unit through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of Knights of Columbus Council 307 are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday evening at 6 p.m. for the recitation of the rosary in memory of Robert Gilarde.
