BENNINGTON -- Robert Bradford Dewey Sr., 86, formerly of Tinkham West and a lifelong resident of Bennington died Wednesday morning April 9, 2003 at the Vermont Veterans Home where he had resided the past several years.

Mr. Dewey was born in Albany, N.Y. on Oct. 16, 1916. He was the son of Edward W. and Janet Drysdale (Shurtleff) Dewey, he grew up in Bennington where he attended local schools, graduating from Bennington High School in 1934. Mr. Dewey continued his education, attending Irving Preparatory School in Tarrytown, N.Y. and Brown University in Providence, R.I. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. As a first lieutenant he had served in the South Pacific as a navigator.

He was married to the former Dorothy Bush in Malone, N.Y. on Jan. 22, 1942. Working as a lumberman throughout his life, he began his career as a lumberjack working in the woods cutting trees, he later became a lumber product buyer working for many companies including Green Mountain Furniture, H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Company and General Interiors. His interest in wood products developed into a hobby which he thoroughly enjoyed - designing and building furniture which he shared with his family. As an outdoorsman he liked to spend time hunting and fishing. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bennington.

Mr. Dewey is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dewey of Bennington; four son, Edward Dewey of Bennington, Robert Dewey Jr. of Bennington, Bradford Dewey of Tampa, Fla. and Rodney Dewey of Island Pond; three daughters, Sandra Sullivan of Rensselaer, N.Y., Julia Kraus of Westford, Mass. and Deborah Kiernan of Slate Hill, N.Y. and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles H. Dewey, and a sister, Jean Drysdale Dewey Carr, who died in 2002.

Private funeral services will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place in the Dewey family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Mr. Dewey may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, VT 05201.
