Obituary Condolences

ARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Robert C. Burgess were held at the Federated Church of East Arlington on Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Thomas Truscott officiating. Personal reflections and tributes of Mr. Burgess were shared by many in attendance.

Music for the service was provided by organist Sara Krohn who accompanied members of the Church choir and Battenkill Chorale offering several selected pieces chosen by Mr. Burgess. The congregation joined in singing “Onward Christian Soldiers,” “Be Thou My Vision,” and “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Violinist Harriet Welther played “Ave Maria” as a special prelude piece. The service concluded with “For all the Saints” and “The Caissons Go Rolling Along.” A time of fellowship followed in the church’s Bailey Hall.

Graveside committal services with full military honors preceded the funeral service at the Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Truscott officiating. Military honors were provided by the Military Forces Honor Guard under the direction of SFC Palasz, the firing squad was comprised of Sgt. Lutt, Sfc. Holmes and Spc. Waheed, the flag draping the casket of Lt. Col. Burgess, a career military man with service during World war II, Korea and Vietnam was folded by Spc. Lopez and Lt. Col. Saddlemire and presented to Mr. Burgess’ wife Miriam by Lt. Col. Saddlemire. Taps were sounded by Carl Graves.

Serving as bearers were Robert C. Burgess Jr., David Fredriks, Jeffrey Nelson, Dr. Michael Welther, Gary O’Gorman and Lawrence Glass.

Mr. Burgess a well known resident of Arlington died Sept. 12, 2006, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer he was 81.

Arrangements were under the care of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
