Robert D. Lindsey 1916 - 2009 BENNINGTON Mr. Robert Dean Lindsey, 92, a former resident of Arlington, and more recently of South Street in Bennington, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at the Vermont Veterans Home, following a long illness. Born in Penn, Ohio, Aug. 25, 1917, son of Charles E. and Hazel Harmer Lindsey, Bob received his education in the Arlington schools and was a graduate of Arlington Memorial High School. A World War II veteran, Bob served in the Army from 1942 1945 as a toxic gas handler until he was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Bob was stationed in Tinian in the Marianas Islands in the northwestern Pacific during the time that the base was used to launch the atomic bomb attacks on Japan. He married the former Helen Aubuchon in Bennington on Feb. 12, 1977. In earlier years, Bob had been employed at Manchester Wood and also as the locksmith at Bennington College for 22 years. He later worked as a self-employed locksmith until his retirement. Bob was a founding member of the Arlington Rescue Squad, a former Arlington Selectman and also served as the Civil Defense coordinator for the Town of Arlington. Bob was a longtime member and Past Master of Battenkill Grange 487 in Arlington and a member of Red Mountain Lodge #63, F & AM. He was a former Boy Scout leader, coached several youth teams in Arlington and enjoyed stamp collecting. From 1942 until 1975 Bob served as a Bennington County Deputy Sheriff. He leaves his wife, Helen Lindsey of Bennington; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Arnold Griffis of Milton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Debra Lindsey of Arlington and Tim and Debbie Lindsey of Harvest, Ala.; two step-children, Sandy McDonough and her husband, Michael, and Gary Dickinson and his wife, Linda, all of Bennington; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Lindsey was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Florence Harwood, Irene Chahanovich and Ralph Lindsey. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held from the Chapel on the Green in West Arlington on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. Private committal services will be held at Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, NY, at the convenience of the family. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Robert Dean Lindsey may be made to the Arlington Rescue Squad through the office of the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. All members of the Arlington Rescue Squad, Battenkill Grange and Masonic Lodge #63 are asked to meet at the Chapel on the Green in West Arlington on Saturday at 2 p.m. to pay respects to the family of Mr. Lindsey.
