NASHUA, N.H. -- Robert J. Keefe Sr., 84, of Walden Pond Drive in Nashua, died Thursday evening, Dec. 4, 2003 at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Keefe was born in Bennington, Vt. on April 9, 1919, son of the late William P. and Anna (Murphy) Keefe. A resident of Nashua since 1960, he had previously made his home in Bennington, and later in Whitman, Mass. for several years.

He was the husband of Mary (Doyle) Keefe of Arlington, Vt., whom he married on June 11, 1949. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this summer.

Mr. Keefe worked in various positions In the shoe industry in Whitman and Brockton, Mass. before moving to Nashua, N.H. in 1960 where he held management positions for the former J.F. McElwain Shoe Co. He finished his professional career with Prime Manufacturing Co. of Lynn, Mass., before retiring in 1986.

After graduation from Bennington High School in 1936, Mr. Keefe entered Syracuse University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1941. He served as a captain in the Army Air Force in Panama from 1943 to 1945 World War II.

Mr. Keefe held memberships in the Nashua Country Club, the Nashua Flycasters Association and other service organizations including the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was a communicant of the Parish of The Resurrection in Nashua.

An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Keefe enjoyed golf, fly fishing and curling. His other interests included Bridge, gardening and watching his four children and 11 grandchildren grow into maturity.

Mr. Keefe was predeceased by a brother, Richard F. Keefe.

Besides his wife, members of his family include two sons and daughters-in-law, William J. and Elizabeth Keefe of Reston, Va. and Robert J. Jr. and Carol Keefe of Woodbury, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara K. and William Boska of Sparta, N.J. and Mary Ellen Keefe and Keith Bombard of Granby, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, Carolyn, Conor, Patrick, Erin, Billy, Brian, Colin, Courtney, Sarah, Hillary and Andrew; a sister-in-law, Catherine Keefe of Lyman, Maine; also nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held in Nashua, N.H. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003. Burial will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington in the spring. Donations in his memory, may be made to the Nashua Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 2 Wellman Ave., Suite 340, Nashua, NH 03064.
