Robert J. Polumbo 1946 - 2008 BENNINGTON Robert James Polumbo of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Bennington, died Friday, July 11, 2008, following a long illness. Born on Aug. 27, 1946, in North Adams, Mass., son of the late James F. Polumbo and Helen Callinan Polumbo, Bob graduated from the former St. Joseph High School in North Adams, Mass., in 1964. In October 1964, Bob enlisted in the Marine Corps, doing two tours of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the military he pursued a career in law enforcement. He first worked for the Florida, Mass., Police Department, then joined the Vermont State Police, the Bennington Police Department, and finally retired from the Bennington County Sheriff's Department. Bob also worked for the State of Vermont as a VOSHA inspector for 16 years, retiring in January 2000. Bob was a member of the Elks Club where he enjoyed many Pitch Tournaments with his partner, Raelene Bardwell. Bob especially enjoyed being"Grill Master" on the Fourth of July for his many friends and family. Although he missed his friends in the Bennington area, Bob loved living in Las Vegas. He leaves his wife, Deborah Legacy Polumbo, whom he married Feb. 14, 1996. Besides his wife, he leaves his large and loving family, including Dennis and Shannon Christie of Tennessee, Alison and Andy Epps of Texas, Dave and Mandy Christie of South Carolina, and CJ Christie of Washington. He leaves his very special grandchildren who knew him as "Papa," Kaleb, Aiden, Gabriel, and Addyson. He also leaves a very special uncle, William Polumbo of North Adams, Mass., and several cousins. Bob also leaves a daughter, Jennifer. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Resurrection will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., on Tuesday from 5 to 7p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the American Diabetes Association or the through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
