Robert Lewis Burdick

Obituary Condolences

WEST PAWLET -- Bob Burdick flew through life. Private pilot, motorcycle enthusiast, Bob passed away peacefully at his home Friday, Sept. 17, 2004. He savored the final year of his life with his wife, Leslie Tarbell, traveling abroad and out West.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1954. A 1972 graduate of Granville High School (”The frogs are comin!” C. L. and me). Bob took to the skies early. He launched hang gliders off the cliffs of the Gaspe Peninsula and across the continent to the California coast. In 1991, he earned his private pilot’s license. From then on, he regularly treated his friends to a bird’s eye view of Rutland County from the seats of his 1958 Piper Super cub, a plane he rebuilt with his wife.

Later in his life, Bob grew to appreciate Italian motorcycles - an interest he enthusiastically shared. He and Leslie particularly enjoyed touring the Adirondacks on their Ducatis and traveling to Daytona to watch the motorcycle races. In New Hampshire, Bob flew around the Loudon race track on track days, then smiled for days as he remembered - and recounted - each turn in the track.

A well-respected builder by trade, Bob constructed custom residential homes across southern Vermont, including his own home, which he and Leslie began building in 2002.

Besides his wife, he leaves behind his mother, Marilyn Burdick of West Pawlet, a brother, scores of friends, and more than one deer that got away. He is predeceased by his father, Harold “Bill” Burdick.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, N.Y. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. at their home in West Pawlet.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made payable to the Robert L. Burdick Foundation, c/o A. G. Edwards, P.O. Box 2000, Manchester Center, VT 05255. The foundation help support the ongoing efforts for brain cancer research.

”Burdick, over and out.”
