Robert John Myers 1929-2012 BENNINGTON Robert John Myers, 83, a longtime resident of Putnam Street in Bennington died Monday May 7, 2012 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, VT April 4, 1929. He was the son of the late John J. and Jennie E. (Stratton) Myers. He received his education at Saint Francis de Sales Academy and was a graduate of Bennington High School. He served in the 3rd Infantry of the United States Army from 1948 1949. He was stationed at Fort McNair in Washington D.C. where he worked as a Provost Guard. He later served in the Army Reserves for 5 years. Married on January 13, 1951 at Saint Peter's R.C. Church in Pittsburgh, PA to Edith A. Dolence, a former pen pal. In earlier years he worked at Rays Market, Estes Market, The Box Factory, H.E. Bradford Company and Norman Construction Company. While living in Pittsburgh he worked at Eazor Motors, Svach's Market and J&L Steel Corp. After moving back to Bennington he worked at the Bijur and Albany Novelty which was a division of the Polygraphic where he was president of the United Paper Workers of America Union. For 35 years he was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service from which he retired. He also worked part time at the Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal in ticket sales. In earlier years Bob was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307 where he held several offices. His main interest was his family. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and rides to Saratoga with his wife. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Edith A. Myers of Bennington, their children, Robert D. Myers of Bennington, Ronald J. Myers and Monica of Frederick, Maryland, Joseph F. Myers and Tina of Chalfont, PA, Elizabeth A. Hutchins and Mark of Nashua, N.H., JoAnne Myers and her fiance Steven McClafferty of Arlington, VT, James M. Myers and Justine of Waterbury Center, VT and Jennie M. Hogan and Neal of Bennington, VT. Nine grandchildren, Robert D. Myers Jr. of Jericho, VT, Cody J. Myers of Bennington, Brianna K. Myers of Milford, N.H., Jessica Walsh of Chalfont, PA, Aaron Hutchins and Alexander Hutchins of Nashua, N.H., Charlotte and Anna Hogan of Bennington and Jack Myers of Waterbury Center, VT. Two great grandchildren, Isabella and Ethan Myers of Jericho, VT. A brother James Myers of Brewster, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by two brothers Norman and Richard Myers, a sister and brother in law Marie and Robert Townsend and a daughter in law Marsha J. Myers. The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday May 18, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial with military honors will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington on Saturday May 19, at Noon. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday May 17, from 4 to 7:00 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of Robert J. Myers may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. All members of the Knights of Columbus Council 307 are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for the rosary.
