POWNAL -- Robert M. “Bob” Niles III, 63, a resident of South Stream Road, Pownal, died suddenly Tuesday, May 29, 2007, while traveling in Springfield.

Born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., June 21, 1943, he was the second of five sons born to the late Robert M. Niles Jr. and Louise (Kastenbein) Niles. He received his early education in the Hoosick Falls schools and was a 1961 graduate of the former Bennington Catholic High School. He later graduated from St. Joseph Business College in Bennington. A Vietnam veteran, Bob served in the Navy from 1966 until 1969.

He married the former Laura Cota in Arlington.

In earlier years Bob was employed at the former Green Mountain Race Track and later at the William E. Dailey Company in Shaftsbury. Bob served as the road foreman in Shaftsbury from 1987 until 1996 when he accepted the position of circuit rider for the Vermont Local Roads program. He held this position for several years until he founded his own consulting business, Northeast Back Roads, which he operated until the time of his death.

Bob was a member of Associated General Contractors and had taught several seminars for AGC throughout the state of Vermont.

A long time supporter of local youth baseball, Bob had coached local teams from 1972 until the present. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially spending time with his two granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Niles of Pownal; his children, Robert M. Niles IV and his fiancé, Claire Monks of Shaftsbury, Theresa C. Niles and her fiancé Joshua Bushee of Sunderland and Jennifer Varga and her husband Anthony of North Bennington; two step-children, Joshua and Rebekah Rosse of Pownal; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Nancy Niles of Bennington, James and Linda Niles of Beaver Dam, Wisc., and Peter and Michelle Niles of North Bennington; a sister-in-law, Sandra Niles of Cambridge, N.Y.; an aunt, Charlotte Wendall and her husband William of Martinsburg, W.V.; his former wife, Wanda Sayce of Abergavenny, Wales; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by a brother, Eric K. Niles.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, June 4, 2007, at 9:15 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The Wake Service will be offered Sunday afternoon.
