1917 - 2012 BENNINGTON, VT Robert Purdy, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at the Vermont Veterans Home, where he had resided the past few years.

Bob was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on Dec. 2, 1917, son of Richard and Mildred (Hicks) Purdy. He grew up in Pownal where he attended the Maple Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse. In 1943, his brother, Ken was killed in action during World War II. Bob enlisted in the Army in 1944, where he was trained as a paratrooper. He received his honorable discharge in 1946.

He had worked throughout most of his life as a carpenter and was an avid woodworker, creating furniture and clocks for many friends and family throughout the area. For a few years he relocated to Massachusetts where he worked with a paper printing business. Upon his return to Bennington, he settled on Burgess Road where he raised his family.

Bob was first married to Jean Knights on Sept. 2, 1939. She died Dec. 20, 1976. Together, they had five children.He later married Jean Lucier on May 15, 1980; she died Sept. 12, 2000.

In addition to being an excellent woodworker, Bob was an avid fisherman and still holds the Vermont State record for the largest Chain Pickerel, which he caught in Harriman reservoir in Wilmington. In his younger years, he enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Bob leaves his son, Richard Purdy of Bennington; daughters, Tracy Purdy-Martin and husband Bill of Shaftsbury, Dale Purdy-Seiferling and husband Bryan of Shaftsbury and Shelley Purdy of Watsonville, Calif.; sister, Charlotte Comar of Pownal; stepchildren, Mark and wife Carol Lucier, Dan and wife Jo-Ann Lucier, Debbie and husband Michael Pinsonneault, Laurie and husband James Pinsonneault, Donna Lucier and Burt Lucier; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Barry Purdy, sister, Mildred Edelston, and brother, Ken Purdy, who died on the same day, Sept. 12, in 1943.
