Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Robert W. Santway, 85, a former resident of Bennington died peacefully at his home in Brattleboro on Tuesday Dec. 5, 2006.

Mr. Santway was born in Watertown, N.Y., on Feb. 17, 1921, he was the son of the late Alfred and Bella (Harris) Santway.

Mr. Santway received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and his master’s degree from Wesleyan University. He was a member of the Sigma Psi Scientific Honor Society. He had been married to Claire Santway and Marcia Bourne, both marriages ended in divorce.

Mr. Santway had worked as a chemist for various electrical component companies including Sprague Electric in North Adams, Mass., General Electric in Glens Falls, N.Y., and Johnson Controls in Bennington.

While residing in Bennington he was a member of the Second Congregational Church where he had served as the Sunday school superintendent and teacher, he was a member and past president of the Green Mountain Hiking Club and Friends of the Bennington Free Library.

Since relocating to Brattleboro, he had been very involved in the community. He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, was involved in the theater and often stood with the Veterans for Peace. Mr. Santway loved the out of doors, including camping, hiking and canoeing. Above all he loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his grandchildren.

He leaves his son, Paul S. Santway and his wife Tanya of Shaftsbury; two daughters, Ruth Clinkscales and her husband David of Attleboro, Mass., and Elsie Santway of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Cara, David and Joshua; a great-grandson Kyraun, his former wife, Claire S. Santway of Bennington, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home 213 West Main Street in Bennington on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mary Lee Clark, pastor of the Second Congregational Church, officiating.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service when the family will be present.
