Robert E. Thompson

1933 - 2010 POWNAL, VT Robert E. Thompson, 77, a resident of Pratt Road in Pownal, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington following a long illness.

He was born in Norwood, Mass., on June 13, 1933, son of Edward H. and Alice H. Phalen Thompson. Bob was a graduate of Norwood High School and the New England Institute of Mortuary Science in Boston.

In earlier years, he was employed as an embalmer and funeral director and also as a licensed motion picture projectionist in the Norwood, Mass. area. After moving to Vermont, Bob worked as a master electrician at the Pownal Tannery and Bennington College. His last employment was at General Cable in Williamstown, Mass., where he worked for several years prior to his retirement. A Korean War veteran, Bob served in the Army from May 14, 1953, through April 30, 1961. He married the former Nancy Purrington at the Pownal Community Church on March 11, 1962.

Bob was a member of Mt. Anthony Lodge # 13, F. & A. M. in Bennington and a member of the Lodge of Perfection, Scottish Rite. Bob was also the State of Vermont Grand Organist for the Masons and for Mt. Anthony Lodge. He is a charter member of the American Legion Post #90 in Pownal, and a life member of the VFW Post#1332 of Bennington. Bob was a volunteer with the Pownal Rescue Squad and the Pownal Fire Department. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagle's in Bennington. Bob especially enjoyed listening to classical music and playing the organ. For many years he served as the organist at the Vermont Veterans Home.

Besides his wife, Nancy Thompson of Pownal, he leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Ronald Cote of North Adams, Mass., and Amy and Joel McLenithan of Cambridge, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Ryan Joel and McKayla Jean McLenithan of Cambridge, N.Y.; a brother, William Thompson of Salem, Ore..; seven nephews and one niece.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 3, at Four Chaplin's All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington at 11:30 a.m. with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt officiating. Friends may call at the All Faiths Chapel on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Mt. Anthony Lodge 13, F & AM or to the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201
