Roberta B. Hewitt

1919-2010 BENNINGTON Mrs. Roberta Beulah Hewitt, 90, a former resident of Route 7 South in Bennington, Vt. and a longtime resident of Clarksburg, Mass. died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her family.

She was born in North Adams, Mass. on Dec. 14, 1919, daughter of the late Robert E. and Beulah Ellen Cook Walker. She received her education in Cambridge, N.Y. and was a graduate of Cambridge Central High School. From the age of six she resided in Cambridge, N.Y. until her marriage to Arthur R. Hewitt on June 27, 1936 in Cambridge, N.Y. Mr. Hewitt died June 25, 1997.

In earlier years Roberta was employed at Rice's Seed Company. During World War II Roberta was employed at the Sprague Electric Company on several production lines including the Gas Mask Line, the Incendiary Bomb Department and the Block Annex Dept. For 13 years she worked for the J.C. Penney Company Store in North Adams in the Domestic Department until her retirement.

Roberta and Arthur lived in North Adams for a year until they purchased a home in Clarksburg, Mass. where they resided for 52 years. In 1989 they bought a home on Route 7 South in Bennington where they owned and operated Hewitt's Lawn and Garden Ornaments.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert A. Hewitt and Mary of Pownal, Vt. and Carlton A. Hewitt and Elaine of Clarksburg, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Tina Bartlett of Bennington, Rhonda Schwartz of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Brian Hewitt of Bennington, Gary Hewitt of Pownal, Brenda Vallone of Clarksburg, Carlton A. Hewitt Jr. of Goode, Va. and Kevin Hewitt of Clarksburg, Mass.; 13 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was pre-deceased by a sister Pearl E. Clark

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Michael Twardy of the Bible Baptist Church officiating.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral on Thurs., July 1, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m.

If friends desire contributions in memory of Roberta B. Hewitt may be made to the Activities Fund at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201
