1921 - 2014 BENNINGTON Rodney W. Hoard Sr., 93, a resident of Hicks Avenue, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. One of 12 children born to Frank A. and Mercy (Colby) Hoard, he was born in Winhall on Feb. 12, 1921. He was a World War II Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Hoard had been an auto mechanic for many years, working at Thurbers Garage, Walter L. Barber, Paulins and Art Wards Garage. He later worked for Stanley Tools, retiring after 10 years. He enjoyed automobiles, working around his home and garden and hunting. His wife, Lillian (Young) Hoard passed in April 1991. He leaves his sons, Edwin F. Hoard of Iva, S.C., Rodney W. Hoard Jr. and wife, Patricia of Bennington, Claude M. Hoard and wife, Janet of Shaftsbury, Thomas J. Hoard and wife, Donna of Bennington; sister-in-law Gladys Hoard of Manchester, nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Alan Hoard on Nov. 6, 2011; by grandsons, Philip and Thomas Hoard Jr., and by his five brothers and six sisters. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services with military honors will take place on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the V.T.
