Roger G. Wood

1926-2012 Roger G. Wood, 86, a resident of Peaceful Meadows, Arlington, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Born in Bennington June 28, 1926, he was the son of the late George and Theresa (Mattison) Wood. Roger received his education in the Shaftsbury schools.

A World War II veteran, Roger served in the U. S. Air Force and obtained the rank of sergeant during that time.

Roger married the former Lillian Cross on April 13, 1952 at the Methodist Church in Bennington with Rev. Vogel officiating.

Roger was employed for nineteen years at the former BenMont Paper Company in Bennington. After leaving BenMont he worked for several years at the Carthusian Monastery on Mount Equinox. Prior to his retirement he was employed for fourteen years at the Alan Mattison & Sons Vault Company in Arlington.

Roger served as a member of the Arlington Fire Department for over fifty years. He was also a member of the East Arlington Federated Church and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington, Roger had been a Grange member since he was 14 years old. During that time he belonged to the Taconic Grange, Battenkill Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange and the National Grange.

A harness racing enthusiast, Roger owned, trained and drove at various harness tracks in the area for many years. He also enjoyed camping in his RV and was a member of the Good Sam Club and the Green Mountain Travelers.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian C. Wood of Arlington; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Dale Wood of Arlington; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Joan Wood of Shaftsbury; a sister, Frances Hunt of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Roger Wood will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kathleen S. Clark, pastor of the Federated Church in East Arlington officiating.

Burial will take place at the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in the Spring.
