Obituary Condolences

READSBORO -- Roland R. “Butch” Johnson, 62, a longtime resident of Readsboro, died at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington on Monday morning, Sept. 29, 2003, following a long illness.

He was born in Readsboro on Feb. 26, 1941 and was the son of Arvid and Myrtle (McDonald) Johnson. He received his education in local schools. On Dec. 7, 1963, he married the former Bonnie Coleman in Whitingham.

Mr. Johnson had been employed as a beater engineer at the Deerfield Specialty Company for many years, and following the closing of the plant, he worked at High Mountain Construction as a carpenter and Tom’s Sunoco Station in Wilmington. He had previously lived in Simsbury, Conn. and in Monroe Bridge, Mass.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Unity Lodge 89, free and accepted masons. He was an avid Yankees fan and a deer hunter. He took great delight in following the varied sports endeavors of his grandsons. Although he was not always able to attend each and every game, he looked forward to hearing from his grandsons following each game and how each one had done.

Besides his wife, Bonnie, of Readsboro, he is survived by two daughters, Tammy Eilers of Halifax, and Laurie Johnson of Whitingham. He has one brother surviving, Charles Johnson of West Dover and his six grandsons, Bradley Marchegiani, Christopher and Patrick Eilers, Matthew Bouker, and Codie and Cameron Johnson. He has several nieces and nephews as well.

Mr. Johnson was predeceased by one son, Mark Johnson, a daughter, Vickey Marchegiani, three brothers, Ronald Johnson, William Johnson and Merle Johnson.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday afternoon, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Readsboro Baptist Church with the Rev. John Brigham officiating. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. Members of Unity Lodge 89, F&AM are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to conduct services.

Memorials in Mr. Johnson’s honor may be made to the Readsboro Baptist Church or the Whitingham Rescue Squad in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
