Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Roland J. Rioux, 82, a former resident of Pownal, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Born in Acushnet, Mass., Oct. 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Theophile and Roseanna (Gilbert) Rioux. He received his education in the Meriden, Conn., schools. Mr. Rioux was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He married the former Mary Doyle Oct. 19, 1953, in Meriden. Mrs. Rioux died Sept. 30, 1998.

In earlier years, Roland was employed as a carpenter. He was later employed for 23 years by International Silver until the time of his retirement in 1985. Following retirement, he was employed as the cashier at the Pownal transfer station.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Donna Rioux of Pownal, a daughter, Mary E. Thompson of Bennington, and a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Lee Turner of Thomaston, Conn.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Noel Rioux of Meriden; five sisters: Rita Maskell and Diane Tullar, both of Wallingford, Conn., Carmel Williams of Meriden, Claire Cosker of Southington, Conn., and Yvonne Snow of Middlefield, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mr. Rioux was predeceased by a son and daughter, Thomas Rioux and Mary Ellen Rioux, and by several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, July 15, 2006, at noon with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Morgan Memorial Cemetery in Pownal.
