Ronald Ralph Knapp

1925 - 2014 BENNINGTON Ronald Ralph Knapp, age 89, completed his earthly life in the home where he was born in Bennington, Vt. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 in the company of his wife of 44 years, Ellen Gird Knapp, his son, Marshall Hudson-Knapp and his wife, Lucinda and friend, Linda Cassano. The son of Ralph and Marcia (Campbell) Knapp, Ron was born Jan. 12, 1925, graduated from Bennington High School, and earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University, where as the lead drummer in the marching band he met his wife, Frances "Betty" Marshall. Ron served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II, rising from Fireman to Engineer escorting merchant convoys through dangerous seas around the world. Ron returned to Bennington working at Shapiro Motors, Allen-A knitting mill, Prudential Insurance, and as a partner in Mardale Builders and Walbridge-Knapp Insurance. Ron operated Knapp's Pets and Hobbies for 30 years, and with his wife, has run Irish Vacation House for the last 10. Ron served his community for 10 years as a member of the Bennington School Board during the formative years of Mount Anthony Union High School, and he represented Bennington, Woodford, and Readsboro for another ten years in the Vermont Legislature. Ron served actively in the First United Methodist, Second Congregational UCC, Old First Church, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He was a life-long Mason, an avid hunter and fisherman, a leader in the Bennington Rod and Gun Club, on the Board of Directors of Verdmont Outing Club, a member of the Bennington Rotary club for 40 years, and a Paul Harris Fellow. His greatest joys were being beloved husband to Ellen whom he married after Betty died in 1970, father to Marshall and his wife, Lucinda of Fair Haven, and grandfather to Naomi Hudson-Knapp, and Moses Hudson-Knapp and his wife, Sandra, and befriending hundreds of family, neighbors and strangers in Bennington. His compassionate, peaceful listening and wonderful stories endeared him to many. Ron was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Betty, and his first son Robert Joseph. The family is particularly grateful for the care of Dr. Drinnon Hand and Bennington Project Independence, and Bayada Hospice Bayada Home Health Care.
