Obituary Condolences

SUNDERLAND -- Ronald Ritchie, 64, a longtime resident of Sunderland, died at his home on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 following a short illness. Mr. Ritchie was born Aug. 17, 1939, the son of the late Henry and Carolyn (Moffat) Ritchie. He attended schools in Arlington and Manchester, graduating from Burr & Burton Seminary class of 1956.

Mr. Ritchie entered the U.S. Air Force in August 1956 and was honorably discharged in April 1967. During his service he was an air traffic control specialist and was stationed in Europe, Korea, Michigan and Texas. He returned to Manchester and was employed by N.E.T.&T. as a telephone lineman. He went back to air traffic control in 1968 and was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration in Rochester, N.Y. He retired in 1978 and returned to Manchester. On May 31, 1986 he married Susan (Counsell) Ritchie. He spent much of his time doing volunteer work. He was a member of the Manchester Rescue Squad for 12 years and the Arlington Rescue Squad for four years. He also worked in the emergency department at the S.W.V.M.C. several years and was a medical assistant at the Northshire Medical Center. Mr. Ritchie was an avid H.A.M. radio operator and was co-founder of the Southern Vermont Amateur Radio Club. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Karen Sener of Burlington; his brother Jack Ritchie of Arlington; his sisters Joan Colvin of Springhill, Fla. and Virginia Martin of Eureka, Calif.; also three grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manchester. The Rev. Deborah Kamm will officiate. His cremated remains will be committed to the earth in the family plot in the Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland on a later date.
