Russell F. Harwood Sr. 1954-2008 BENNINGTON Russell F. "Russ" Harwood Sr., 54, a resident of County Street, died suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 5, at his residence. Born in Bennington Feb. 2, 1954, son of Junior A. Harwood and Pauline Hulett Harwood Torri, Russ received his early education in the Shaftsbury schools and was a 1972 graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School. Russ was employed for several years at the Vermont State Fish Hatchery in Bennington. An avid outdoorsman and lover of nature, he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. Russ was a CB Radio enthusiast whose handle was "Long Beard". He enjoyed NASCAR racing and will be remembered by many for his generous personality and his willingness to help those in need. For many years Russ had entertained area children at Christmas time with his Santa Claus imitation. He leaves two sons, Russell F. Harwood Jr of Bennington and Jeremy P. Harwood; his companion, Kari Parker, and Russ's very special granddaughter, Nevaeh of Bennington; his mother, Pauline Torri, of Rutland; his father and step-mother, Junior and Glenda Harwood of Shaftsbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Larry Courcelle of Mendon; a brother and sister-in-law, Matthew and Jodi Harwood of Shaftsbury; an adopted son, C.J. Denio and his wife, Debbie, of Bennington; a step-daughter, Amy Richardson and her daughter, Riley Richardson, of Shaftsbury; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Russ was predeceased by a daughter, Nicole Harwood and his stepfather, Raymond Torri. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Russell F. Harwood Sr. will be held from the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. with interim pastor Rev. David Smith officiating. Friends are invited to pay their respects to the family at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Shaftsbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Russ's memory may be made payable to Wanda Courcelle to be used for Neveah's education, a conservation camp scholarship, or the local food shelf through the offices of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
