Russell Perry

1944-2009 BENNINGTON Russell Perry, 65, a resident of Astrachan Drive in Bennington died Tuesday Nov. 24, 2009 at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.

He was born in New Bedford, Mass. Jun. 12, 1944. He was the son of the late John and Elmira Fontes Perry.

Russ was a graduate of South Dartmouth High School class of 1962.

For four years Russ served in the Air Force 810th Medical Group in Fairchild, Wash. where he was an SAC Trained Medic. He later was transferred to Anchorage, Ala. where he served at the Elmindorf Air Force Hospital.

While in Alaska, Russ was the Chief Ophthalmic Technical NCO for Surgical and Clinical Services for the entire Alaska Air Command during the Vietnam War. He considered it an honor to serve his country. He had the greatest respect for U.S. combat troops.

He married the former Brenda Barnini on Aug. 8, 1987 at Saint Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington.

In earlier years, Russ was employed as an ophthalmologist's physician's assistant and surgical assistant for Dr. James Fitzgerald and for 20 years was employed at Optical Services in Bennington. He was a licensed optician in both Vermont and Massachusetts. For ten years Russ was employed as a counselor at 204 Depot in Bennington. He most recently drove the Green Mountain Express until his illness forced him to retire.

Russ was a gifted golfer and tennis player. While a member at the Mount Anthony Country Club, Russ won the Club Championship in both tennis and golf in the same year. He loved nature, bird watching and fishing. Russ loved his pets, Mister Higgins and his "baby girl" Sophie. He was an avid Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots fan. Russ loved to spend time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Perry of Bennington; his son, Darren Ricchi and his wife, Krista, of Becket, Mass.; two brothers-in-law, Milton Breault of Cape Cod, Mass. and Daniel Barnini of Dalton, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Patricia Rivers and her husband, Kenneth, of Pittsfield, Mass.; his nephews and nieces, David Breault and wife, Debra, Paul Breault and wife, Diane, Peter Breault and wife, Rebecca; and his godchild and niece, Jennifer Breault, all of Cape Cod, Rebecca Barnini and Tony Barnini both of Pittsfield, Kellie Ciepiela and husband, John, of Windsor, Mass.; and Anthony Bazzano. He also leaves his great-nieces and great-nephews, John Breault, Peter Breault, Christopher Breault and Danielle Breault all of Cape Cod and Rebecca; and godchild Britney Bazzano of Newington, Conn.

He was predeceased by a sister, Beverly Breault.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at 10 a.m.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to either the Lusgarten Foundation or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
